Giving a concert, mounting a sculpture of a horse’s head, even placing iron bars on the windows as a commentary on homelessness—all have been means of payment for rooms at the Hotel Marienbad in Germany. The ultra-posh five-star hotel is inviting travelling artists to stay for free, as long as they contribute some
of their creations. The offer has filled rooms with crowds trying to see sculptures or listen to a reading. Susanne Pfeffer, curator of the organization that set up the project, says there’s a long waiting list of
artists anxious to leave a little bit of themselves behind.
