The “umbrella revolution,” some called it, because the protesters wouldn’t let the rain stop them from taking to the streets of Hong Kong. Their umbrellas weren’t as effective against the tear gas fired by police, and yet the movement continued, with tens of thousands of people gathering in downtown Hong Kong to demand that China allow the country to hold free elections in 2017. Despite fears of another Tiananmen Square, the protesters managed to turn up the heat on China and become what some have called the most successful Chinese pro-democracy movement to date.
