Irena Sendler died this morning in Warsaw, age 98.

During the war, with her country occupied by the Nazis, threatened by the Soviets and too long abandoned by its erstwhile European allies, Sendler and her friends saved 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto. For her efforts she was arrested and tortured by the Nazis. Read more about her extraordinary story here.
