Weekend Viewing: “Candidate Larry”

Continuing our run of election-themed TV episodes, Newhart (season 4) features a race for mayor of whatever Vermont town it is that Dick Loudon lives in (well, it’s basically Hooterville, but they can’t call it that), and Larry, with the able campaign support of his brothers Darryl and Darryl, decides to throw his tuque — I think that’s what that is — into the ring.

I always thought the breakout characters from this show were not Larry, Darryl and Darryl, but the two middle-aged townspeople, Jim (Thomas Hill) and Chester (William Lanteau). Jim’s wild-eyed, perpetually smiling insanity and Chester’s pseudo-intellectual insanity, plus the way they always managed to blame everything on Dick, made them two very funny and scary guys. Why didn’t the audience clap when they came in?
